Original leaf from the very rare Koelhoff chronicle by Johann Koelhoff the Younger from 1499. -- sheet size: approx. 29.5 x 20 cm -- margined on the left, otherwise in good condition. || Original page from the very rare Chronicle of Cologne by Johann Koelhoff the younger, from 1499. --- deposited on the left margin, otherwise in good condition. || The Koehlhoffsche chronicle of the city of Cologne (Cronica van der hilliger Stat van Coellen) is one of the most important printed books of the late Middle Ages. The chronicle was published in a limited edition of around 250 copies in 1499. The anonymous author criticizes both the clergy and the secular rulers in his chronicle, so that the work was banned and confiscated three months after publication. At the instigation of the church, some pages had to be replaced. Along with Hartmann Schedel's World Chronicle, it is one of the most richly illustrated incunabula. It is also an important source work on the history of the city of Cologne in the Middle Ages, since the information it contains about the city from the mid-15th Century are reasonably reliable. The chronicle was printed in Low German and thus represents a rare example of this language genre for incunabula.
