Description

Ironstone printed platter with printed design and inpainting. c. 1820.
Condition: Minor surface wear; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.

The border of the plate is decorated with colorful flowers against a gray ground, with a few sprays flowing beyond. This border pattern, called "Ship Border, became very popular and was often used by Spode with other central designs,
The central scene is surrounded by a Meissen-style gold and puce border.
The foreground image is of a mother and child next to a large building.
In the background is a shoreline with buildings, and beyond there is a European sailing ship. The impression is of a harbor which the ship may either be approaching or leaving.
The pattern copies 18th Century Chinese export designs.
The reverse bears a printed Spode “Stone China” mark and a painted pattern number.
