AT AUCTION:2 Antique Lge Traditional English STAFFORDSHIRE Mantel SPANIEL Dogs w/Glass Eyes
Item: Large traditional antique mantel Staffordshire Spaniel Dogs in a seated mirrored pose. They are very impressive figurines in wonderful vintage condition. Coloring is white with gilt decoration and typical gilt chain with lock, amber glass eyes, reddish mouth line, black noses with little whiskers, and great curled tails. Excellent attention to detail is seen on both dogs.
They are unmarked, old and have a wonderful expression. This pair of Spaniel Dogs were purchased as a set, at the same time, by original owner.
In research I have done it is a
rarity to find an older set of dogs so closely matched.
Staffordshire spaniels are the quintessential Victorian decoration. Of all the figures the potters created, sets of whimsical spaniels became the favorite, and came to epitomize Staffordshire ceramics.
Measurements: Approximately 12 1/4" high and 9" across base form part and 11" if measured toe to tail.
Marks: Unmarked on bottom.
Condition: Antique large figurines in very good condition. No chips or cracks noted. Glass eyes are clear and bright. When viewed they look wonderful but with a magnifying glass the age crazing is definitely notable on both dogs.
Superb collectible large dogs with seam markings and three firing steam release smaller air holes (on high back, tail area, and base). Natural wear to the gold/gilt is evident especially on the chain and lock. Backs of both dogs are finished also. Please examine the pictures closely as they are part of the description. Every effort is made to provide accurate identification of items.
I do my best to describe major flaws (and any minor ones that I find along the way) and I will always disclose actual damage or repairs, but it is impossible to describe every little flaw.
These are original and not reproductions. Please ask questions prior to bidding if there is information not clear or covered in listing.
Early figurines were made by pressing two molds together, and this can be confirmed by the presence of a seam line. Later items were made from a slip cast (which is made in one piece) and there will be no seam .These 2 spaniels have a visible seam line across the top of the head and down the back.
An absolute wonderful example of an antique pair of Staffordshire Spaniel Dogs.
