    Tea Set
    GARDEN GIRL
    c 1840
    This delicious little toy transferware
    tea set
    circa 18
    4
0 was made for children's teatime play or for a dollhouse. The color is a rich
purple or violet, sometimes called mulberry or lavender,
    on a
creamy earthenware blank, finished with pearlware glaze.
    The
    set
is round and squat, decorated with a
girl in the garden surrounded with a fruit basket
and summer flowers. A great example of the pottery craft of imitating grown ups for children.
    The set
was made in the early to mid-19th century the Staffordshire district of England. The set is unmarked and the maker and pattern name is unknown.
    The set comprises:
Teapot with lid, 3 inches tall, 5-1/2 inches across (reglued handle, chip inside lid)
Sugar box or sucrier with lid, 3 inches tall, 4 inches across, sheepshead handles (firing crack on one handle, chip on edge of lid), and
    3 cups, 1-1/2 inches tall, and 3 saucers , 4 inches across.
    The
    set
    is in
    overall good
condition, especially considering its age and use by generations of children.
Damage and flaws as described above, and
    no
    other
    chips cracks or repairs.
Mild discoloration and glaze crazing consistent with prior use.
Stilt marks original to the making. The set has the unique naïve charm of the Victorian tea wares. Richly detailed, it is just amazing that this miniature
    tea set
belonged to a child well over 100 years ago!
