60th Infantry Division
was a very unusual unit in a sense that it was formed from the elements of the so-called "
Gruppe Eberhard
".
"
Gruppe Eberhard
" consisted of police units and was tasked with the capture of the city of Danzig at the eve of the war.
After the success of the operation, units of the
"
Gruppe Eberhard
" were turned into a proper combat-ready infantry division. 60th Infantry Division than participated in the Invasion of France and after the end of the campaign was upgraded to the "motorized" status. In the summer 1941 it along with many other units entered the territory of the Soviet Union, fighting under the Army Group South. In 1942 it reached
Stalingrad
, where it met its ultimate fate in the winter of 1942-1943.
