Childs Teapot
PUNCH & JUDY
Charles Allerton & Sons
Staffordshire England c 1890
This is a whimsical and rare childs transfer printed teapot, circa 1890,
originally part of a complete childs tea set for doll house tea parties
. The
round melon shaped lidded pitcher stands 5-1/2 inches tall
with an inset lid, decorated in a
rich marine blue-green.
The
set f
eatures the fabulous characters from the Punchinella puppet show (dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Punch, Judy and baby surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies.
The pattern name is Punch. It was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets.
The
base is signed
with pattern and maker’s name
.
This
set
is in great
condition,
with flea bite nibbles on the tip of the spout and no
cracks chips or repairs.
The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not all aligned neatly, and there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to the making
and consistent with age
. Slight patina on the base. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. Offered as is, as shown.
Antique English transferware in the Punch and Judy pattern is quite scarce and highly sought after, particularly in this great shade of marine blue green. This amusing
set
will make a
nice
addition to your collection of children's dishes or any collection of Punch and Judy, jester, puppetry or magical memorabilia. Please send us a message with any questions or if you would like to see additional photos.
